Photoshop would magically create a contact sheet for you. There are actually two download pages, one for windows and one for mac.

It's a potent app, but to enjoy its features you have to invest in the premium version; the trial edition comes with big limitations. After a speedy installation, iDefrag for Mac informs you that the demo version allows you to tweak settings -- but not to defragment your hard drive. You begin by selecting the disk to be analyzed and, once you provide the administrator password, the analysis starts. The duration of the disk analysis varies greatly depending on the size of the drive and its speed, but in our tests we were able to complete an analysis of a GB hard drive in approximately 70 seconds.

When it comes to the defragmentation, itself, you can choose between five algorithms, which increase in complexity and thus completion time. All of them provide better performance afterward. A nice touch is the option to receive an e-mail notification once the defragmentation is finished. If you want to get the best out of your hard drives, you will appreciate iDefrag for Mac. While it does come with a price tag, its powerful algorithms and pleasant interface make it worthwhile. This is definitely one of the better hard disk management tools currently available for Mac OS X.

Read reply 1. Have used it for years over several versions and it has always seemed to work as advertised and has allowed me to keep my older systems continuing to run with better speed. Easy to use. Simple interface.

And with a problem that Disk Utility couldn't see as a problem nor repair. Luckily I had a fairly recent backup, but had just added some content that I didn't want to lose.

I went through many of these steps unsuccessfully and eventually had to wipe the hard drive anyway and go back to my month old backup. It was a lot of work just to have to bail on it, and it shook my confidence in the software, but as I said, the developer really tried to help me out. Creating Bootable DVDs to optimize a startup disk has been dicey. Many times the process fails, but not due to a DVD media write error.

I think it's a pretty great program. I had settled on it and as is often the case for me then just worked with it as my tool of choice, not being the type to keep searching for that even better tool. After my scare with the HD not mounting I wondered if there might be a more popular app for this and am still open to suggestions. But it seems to do what it says.

How to defrag a Mac? — Do Macs need defragmentation?

In my book, that's a FAIL. Select your disc w your name. You get that little lock screen and the "can't read" etc? Now click on the lock. Enter your admin password. That's it! If you a recent version of OSX certainly if you use Lion , this program is redundant with the defragging built into the OS itself. See MacMost videos It's bad enough to make freeware with no real function, but to charge for software that specifically plays on users' ignorance and makes them think something useful is happening when it is not Snake oil, anyone? There was a glitch with the "System Preferences" quick link in my "Dock".

Quick fix was replacing it with a fresh one. My G5 will be 10 years old in a couple of months. Over the years, I've done the basic maintenance, and it's still a solid system. I've used it as a base for a home recording studio, as well as everything else. Over the past couple years it began to slow up. I was reluctant using using a defrag program until I read reviews on iDefrag.

What Is Disk Defragmentation After All?

I gave it a go and I'm sure glad I did. This thing flys just like it did when it was new! You'll be glad you did. Additionally, all applications seemed to start faster observed - no metrics. There was a lot of conficting information on the Internet -- on whether defragmentation had any value on Macs.

So What is Defragmenting, and Why Does Windows Need It?

In my experience, the improvement was well worth the price. As other reviews have said - good layout, excellent options how quickly you want to take defragging basically , very simple to use and best of all, stable. The other positive reviews are spot-on. Can't see why you wouldn't like it to be honest. Didn't give it the 5 stars 'spectacular' but who would call a defrag util 'spectacular'??

Many options, does what it's supposed to do, stable, does not cause file system problems as many others do, easy to understand interface, excellent support.

Speed up your Mac by defragmenting the disk drive | RAW Mac

Too slow - but not slower than other optimizers like TechTool Pro which do not offer the options this product does. ALL optimizers are too slow! If you then save another file and it is too big to fit in the space, it might be split in two, part of it in the empty space and the rest of it saved elsewhere.

An intelligent filing system could look for a large enough space to save the file without splitting it, avoiding fragmentation. Another way in in which files become fragmented is when they grow. Suppose you have file1, file2 and file3 on the disk drive. File2 could be a video say, and you edit the video, paste in some extra scenes making it longer and then save it to disk.

File2 has no space to expand because it is immediately followed by file3, so the extra is saved elsewhere. You then get file1, file2, file3, file2-continued. This type of fragmentation is next to impossible to avoid. Defragmenting the disk involves moving files that are fragmented to somewhere else on the disk where they will fit without being split. Blocks of empty space on the disk drive are eliminated by packing all the files together at the start of the disk too.

The result is more efficient use of the disk and better read and write speeds. Before the disk is defragmented, it is best to check that the disk drive is healthy and free of errors. Go to the Applications folder, open the Utilities folder and run Disk Utility. There always seems to be a few minor errors and they are best fixed before defragging. There is no point in defragging the Trash, so right or Ctrl click it in the Dock and empty it. Unfortunately, OS X does not have a disk defragmenter and there are no free ones you can download and install. I am going to use the disk defragmenter in Stellar Drive ToolBox , which is a collection of tools for cleaning, optimising, erasing and tuning the disk.

Select Drive Defrag in the list of tools on the left and click the Continue button. Select a volume on the left and it is scanned for fragmented files. Here you can see that on this MacBook that there are four files that are split into over fragments.

Files can be selected using the tick boxes to the left of the filenames and then the Defrag Files button at the top can be used to defrag them. That is fine if you want to defrag just the worst files, but to optimise the whole disk, select the Layout tab. Red blocks show fragmented files. There is a little menu in the top left corner that enables you to select from four different defragmentation methods. Use Quick Defrag if you are in a hurry, but if you have plenty of time, use the Full Defrag option. There is a snag.

How to Safely Defrag a MAC

Defragging the boot volume is not possible, probably because many operating system files are in use. You can defrag any other volume though. To defrag the boot volume you need to boot the Mac from a DVD. Stellar provides a facility to create a disc image that you can burn to a DVD when you select the boot volume for defragging.

Boot with it and defrag the startup volume.
