I pretty much only eat appetizers starters when we eat out; the portion sizes in most places are ridiculous and could easily feed two. Having said that, it's always perfectly acceptable to split something between two people if you want to. And don't get me started on the food that gets thrown away. The waste is sickening.
Sometimes I order a meal without the item that I'm not going to eat, why waste it? They look at me like it's the weirdest thing they've ever been asked. I was stunned at the size difference when I was last there - now I'm a big girl who can eat a proper roast dins with all the trimmings, but I found some of the portions ridiculous!
Then we visited the US last year and it was crazy! Already used to large serving sizes here, we found it just about impossible to finish our plate which, when it's something you've been trained to do from the moment you're introduced to solid foods, is very difficult. I can be full to bursting and still feel compelled to eat the last of whatever's before me.
By the end of our stay, we were tending to get one serving between my mother, my sister, and I my father has a unique ability to eat copious amounts in one sitting and then just eat nothing for a few days afterwards.
