Pressing this key, which resembles the Windows logo, will force the desktop's taskbar to display at the bottom of the screen. You can then click the full-screen program's icon to minimize it, or you can press the "Show Desktop" bar in the far-right corner of the taskbar. This will exit any full-screen windows and minimize each window to the taskbar.
Keep in mind that re-opening any of these windows will prompt them to resume in full-screen mode.

Especially if you're playing a game that's freezing, pressing this combination of keys will almost always take you out of the window. To get to the desktop: Click Task Manager. Click the Processes tab. Click the full-screen program. Click End task. Manually shut down your computer. If you're encountering a full-screen program that won't close, press and hold your computer's Power button or, if it's a desktop, remove the power cable until the computer shuts down.
When you restart your computer, all previously open windows will be closed. Method 2.

This command removes windows from full-screen mode, at which point you can click the yellow "Minimize" button in the top-right corner of the window. Try using the Esc key to exit full-screen mode. It's in the top-left side of the keyboard. The Esc key is ideal for exiting full-screen YouTube videos or photos on your computer. You can click the window's yellow "Minimize" button after disabling full-screen mode.
How do I exit out of fullscreen mode?
Pressing Esc while playing a game won't minimize the game. Return to it by clicking the new minimized icon in your Dock, next to the Trash icon. Some programs will simply exit full-screen after using this shortcut, meaning you'll need to click the yellow "Minimize" button to fully minimize the program. This will turn all windows in the program invisible. There should also be a button on your keyboard. If you click it, it opens up another desktop. If you go to Mission Control while in a game, you can open up that extra desktop. You can always go back to the game by clicking the game icon in your dock. I have no expierience with that. PC with Mac operating system: I have no advice for you here. Always remember update your software! I'm on an imac. No OSX key command will work while in a steam fullscreen game.
F3 doesn't do anything. I cannot launch mission control through any key command, I've even set buttons to my multi button mouse to launch mission control or others: launchpad, dashboard etc , these buttons will not work in-game. The tip for launching a new desktop in mission control was helpful, but it does not help this situation.
I'm using mountain lion's most current software. The problem isn't the mac. It's steam's bad porting of the steam application. The only solution in my mind is for the steam developers to add a bit of mac functionality to their client. Originally posted by adezero :.

Got this working on every mac game from steam, one of those 2 will work it just depends from the game. I use it all the time and never had any corrupt files or anything like that.
If I do that with a game that uses alot of system resources it takes a couple minutes to get to the desktop and be able to do anything and then if I maximize the game it will take another minute or two to get the game running smoothly again. Funny thing. Though that game was running very well and surprisingly when I went to exit it was basically instant. It usually hangs for a minute when I try to go to the main menu after the graphs. Only in the short term. Some games simply don't like to be alt-tabbed. Some games show a black screen, but can be alt tabbed back into the game, some games show a black screen, but upon trying to alt tab back in the game crashes Worms World Party , and some games restrict alt-tabbing all together Quake III.
However, after quitting the program, or restarting the computer, there shouldn't be any long term affects and the computer should be fine. In other words, if you can't see anything wrong after you've alt-tabbed instantly - there won't be anything wrong with doing it. I believe its one of the requirements for the official MS Games for Windows certification. The game must be able to closed to desktop and restore without crashing. And as said before, it depends on the game.

Most games work, some react badly upon restore and some break altogether. Short answer, it's not harmful to your hardware, but could potentially corrupt your software. Software can always be recovered. Can you show us any proof of that?
